The movement of people across borders is an urgent political and humanitarian issue today: historical context offers crucial perspective. Historians’ reconstruction of patterns and cases of human mobility reveal both long-term continuities and crucial moments of change. Tracing the experiences of forced labor migrants, political refugees, temporary “guest workers,” and families reuniting across borders allows us to see how these have varied over time, and to assess the impact of policy regimes on migrants and the communities around them.
